From Debate to Dance Floor: UNHRC Delegates Trade Speeches for Song and Dance
After hours of serious deliberations, heated exchanges and careful diplomacy, the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) briefly traded the committee floor for a stage of a different kind: a mini karaoke session. The delegates quickly swapped formal debate for music and dance. What began as a casual conversation about plans for the evening turned into an impromptu lunchtime celebration, with delegates singing, dancing and cheering one another on.
Delegates from Pakistan and China drew loud applause as they took the microphone and showcased their singing talents. Delegates from Chad, Sudan, Thailand and others soon joined the fun, turning the break into a lively display of talent and camaraderie.
But the biggest cheers came when Malaysia called the delegate of Nigeria to the floor for a dance. With the room watching, the two took centre stage as cheers and laughter filled the committee space.
Even the committee’s Director joined in, adding a performance of their own to the growing entertainment.
The Chair eventually brought the mini concert to a memorable close with a rendition of “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran, earning a loud cheer from delegates.
For a committee accustomed to discussing some of the world’s most pressing human rights issues, the karaoke session offered a welcome reminder that diplomacy, at least for a few minutes, could also come with music, laughter and a dance floor.
