DISEC Opens with Heated Debate on Maritime Security and Disarmament
At the Lifelink Model United Nations (LTMUN) conference, the opening session of the Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) saw delegates bring an energetic and eager spirit to discussions on issues relating to global security.
The DISEC committee, housed in the Language Department at the University of Ghana (UG), began its proceedings between 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. The Chair outlined five fundamental rules to ensure smooth committee proceedings, while also emphasising the importance of genuineness from delegates.
The committee then moved between formal and informal sessions. The informal session brought forward a number of controversial opinions, including a motion stating that “Everything Donald Trump, the President of the United States of America, does is in the interests of its nation.” The motion created a tense atmosphere in the committee and received a strong second from the delegate of Israel.
The formal session presented two topics for consideration: Topic A, the militarisation of undersea infrastructure and critical maritime security, and Topic B, strengthening global disarmament frameworks to prevent the weaponisation of maritime chokepoints and ensure international strategic stability.
Topic B was selected by a clear majority, marking the beginning of a moderated caucus in which delegates presented their views on the causes and effects of the issue, as well as possible solutions.
The opening session set the stage for further debate as delegates turned their attention to maritime security, disarmament, and the broader question of maintaining international strategic stability.
